Getting Started: Your First Steps to Importing
Before you can start importing products through ImportMate, there are a few quick admin steps you’ll need to take. This guide explains what each one means, why it matters, and how to complete it easily — even if you’ve never done it before.
1. Register as a Sole Trader
If you’re starting out on your own, you’ll need to register as a sole trader with HMRC. This lets you legally run your business and pay tax on any profits you make.
- It’s completely free to register.
- Once registered, you’ll receive a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number in the post.
- You’ll use your UTR every time you file a Self Assessment tax return.

2. Set Up Your Government Gateway Account
The Government Gateway is the login you’ll use to access tax, business and import services. You’ll need this account to apply for an EORI number and file returns.
- It usually takes 1–2 weeks to receive your activation code by post.
- You can use your email address to create the account — no business bank details are needed yet.

3. Find or Request Your UTR Number
If you’ve already registered for Self Assessment in the past, you may already have a UTR number. You can find it on previous tax letters or request it again from HMRC.
4. Apply for an EORI Number
Your Economic Operator Registration and Identification (EORI) number is what allows you to import goods into the UK legally. You’ll need it before your first shipment leaves the supplier.
- It’s free to apply.
- You’ll need your UTR and Government Gateway details ready.
- Applications are approved quickly — usually within 48 hours.
